How to cut flowers at a pick-your-own farm so they last
Short version: cut in the cool morning and put stems straight into water. Sunflowers last longest when cut almost fully open, while zinnias and dahlias should be fully open; at home, use a clean vase, remove leaves below the water and change the water when it gets cloudy.
When should you cut each flower?
Illinois Extension says some flowers, like sunflowers and peonies, are best cut as they begin to open, while zinnias and dahlias should be fully open. UMass Extension advises cutting sunflowers when almost completely open.
What time of day is best?
Morning. Iowa State Extension notes flowers are most hydrated before the heat of the day. Evening is second best.
How do you get flowers home fresh?
Bring a bucket with an inch or two of water, keep it in the shade and avoid a hot trunk. Use clean, sharp snips if the farm allows your own.
How do you make a bouquet last?
- Use a clean vase.
- Remove leaves below the water line.
- Change the water when low or cloudy; Iowa State says floral preservative helps, and plain clean water is second best.
- Keep it away from heat, sun and ripening fruit.
