About U-Pick Near
U-Pick Near helps families find a farm to pick, cut or visit near them: Christmas tree farms, pumpkin patches, apple orchards, berry farms and more.
Where the farms come from
- USDA Local Food Directories: the public agritourism directory (13,411 farms) and on-farm markets that list pick-your-own, trees, pumpkins or mazes (414).
- National Christmas Tree Association Real Christmas Tree Locator (2,693 tree farms).
We combine these, remove duplicates (same name within 3 miles) and tag each farm by activity using only the words in its listing. Town names come from the farm's own mailing address when it has one. We never invent hours, prices or what a farm grows. Most USDA listings were last updated in 2024, so each farm page shows its listing date. Check hours before you go.
Public data we add to each farm
- USDA AMS Local Food Directories: farm websites, phone numbers, business email addresses, social links, payment methods, SNAP/WIC acceptance, growing practices, and nearby farmers markets and CSAs.
- USDA Food and Nutrition Service SNAP Retailer Locator: farms authorized to accept SNAP.
- USDA NASS 2022 Census of Agriculture: county and state farm counts, agritourism and crop acreage.
- NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020: average highs, lows, rain and frost dates from the nearest weather station.
- National Weather Service (api.weather.gov): forecasts and active weather alerts.
- USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (2023), USDA Agricultural Research Service and Oregon State University PRISM Group. Zones shown are looked up from the official dataset; this site is not the official map.
- U.S. Census Bureau: county boundaries and address checks (Census Geocoder).
- OpenStreetMap: nearby restrooms, playgrounds, picnic areas, places to eat, gas and EV chargers, and some opening hours and phone numbers. Β© OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
- Farms' own websites: phone numbers, hours and email addresses a farm publishes in schema.org markup on its homepage (we respect robots.txt).
- Montgomery County, Maryland open data: Farm Tour directory.
US federal government data is in the public domain. We match records to farms by name and location, so a detail can be wrong; farms can fix their listing for free.
